Joe was born and raised in Lagrange, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Forestry. Joe worked as a land appraiser with the US Forest Service for 37 years. After retiring from both the US Forest Service and the US Army Reserves, Joe began work as a commercial appraiser. He helped mentor his two youngest sons, who have followed in his footsteps as General Appraisers. Joe also was a USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) Instructor for several years. While he is mostly retired, Joe continues to work on Appraisal Technical Reviews and as an advisor to CDN. Joe and his wife, Laverne, celebrated their 60th anniversary in September 2021. They reside in the Haw Creek community of Asheville, NC. They have three children and five grandchildren.
